Happening at GAC: Dynamic Future of Credit Union House Unveiled

Exciting plans for the modernization of the Credit Union House in Washington, D.C. were unveiled on the mainstage at the National Governmental Affairs Conference on Tuesday, March 4.

“A living, breathing digital impact tool right at the heart of Capitol Hill” is what the future will bring to 403 C. St NE in Washington, D.C. The Credit Union House is owned by all of the nation’s credit union state trade associations and the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL). It has long been an important gathering spot for credit union leaders and elected officials, but the modernization project brings “the epicenter of advocacy” into the future. Technology will help every visiting Member of Congress see in real time how credit unions are serving the people in their states with home and business loans, jobs, community engagement, and more.

Troy Stang, GoWest Credit Union Association’s President and CEO, is Chairman of the Credit Union House Board of Directors and gave the GAC audience its first look at the dynamic plans.

“It’s no secret that credit union advocacy is evolving; the way we engage lawmakers, the way we tell our story, and the way we showcase our impact,” Stang said. “That’s why leagues across the nation are embarking on this bold modernization of the Credit Union House. It’s a glow-up that will transform the space into a living, breathing digital impact tool in the heart of Capitol Hill.”

The project will double the Credit Union House’s meeting space, offering areas for small group discussions, larger spaces to accommodate hundreds of guests, dining space, and “office hotels” for credit union advocates who are in the beltway to meet with elected officials and regulators.  The renovations are so extensive that even elevators are being moved. Virtually every nook and cranny will become new.

The credit union league system has already raised more than 40 percent of the capital needed for the modernization project, while many credit unions have also made contributions. Notably, Wash.-based BECU made a substantial contribution to the project.

“We know that a stronger Credit Union House means stronger advocacy, stronger communities, and a stronger future for all of us,” said Beverly Anderson, President and CEO. “Every single credit union, every league, every advocate has a role to play in making this vision a reality.”

When the modernization plans were rolled out during GAC, other credit unions and individuals were invited to follow the journey and contribute as well. The project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027.
