Ready Now: New Impact Data for Credit Union Advocates

Documenting credit unions’ impact proves they are essential to the economy, and that their not-for-profit cooperative structure tangibly benefits people and communities. Advocates in the GoWest region will now have impressive data and supporting stories in their toolkit, as they fan out in state capitals and in Washington, D.C. to advocate for credit union priorities.

Introducing the New Economic and Community Impact Reports

Oxford Economics, one of the world’s foremost independent global advisory firms, performed an analysis of credit unions’ positive impact in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. The analysis quantifies credit unions’ impact in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment, and member benefits.

In addition, the GoWest Community Impact Survey measured credit unions’ partnership with local community organizations through contributions and volunteerism, financial education offerings, services to underserved communities, and as sources of capital to consumers and small businesses.

What matters most to legislators is how credit unions are serving their constituents in the counties, congressional districts, and states in which they are elected to serve. That information is included in the new reports.

Visit the Economic & Community Impact website to find all of the resources, including Oxford Economics’ detailed executive summary, and a one-sheet report you can download that includes both economic and community impact data, and stories from credit unions to support the numbers. New this year is an interactive map showing credit unions’ impact in every county and congressional district – information policymakers are anxious to see.

This good news was shared in the recent Wyoming and Idaho Credit Union Day at the Capitol events. Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington’s events are coming up soon, as is the Americas Credit Unions National Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington. If you have not registered yet, or want to bring more members of your team, information is available online.

Many industry groups advocate when Congress and state legislatures are in session, but having robust county, congressional district, and state level impact data available can set credit unions apart. These resources are possible because of credit unions’ support and engagement. The support of GoWest member credit unions is appreciated.
