Job Description:

Responsible for overseeing the Commercial Lending department. This position will be primarily responsible for oversight of business development and managing commercial operations. The primary objective is to increase profitability and grow outstanding loans on a long-term basis by creating new relationships, managing and expanding existing relationships while maintaining strong credit quality. Responsible for all policies and procedures used to govern, underwrite and service commercial loans. Responds to changing economic conditions to meet business lending needs and our financial profitability goals. Provides training, coaching, oversight and direction for all members of Commercial Lending team. Provides strong leadership in promoting teamwork, staff development, exceptional member service, and recognition of staff accomplishments.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for business loan and deposit strategy inclusive of business development and origination, underwriting, loan approval, loan servicing and portfolio administration
  • Will collaborate closely with executive leadership, marketing, financial planning & analysis, credit risk, information technology, and key partners to define Commercial lending’s product mix
  • Oversee and determine direction on all aspects of Commercial loan/credit risk (including policies, procedures, underwriting guidelines, and quality control)
  • Plan and direct all aspects of Commercial, Small Business (C&I) and SBA lending to meet strategic goals (including development/implementation of initiatives, budgets, and objectives)
  • Make recommendations to pricing and products
  • Establish annual and strategic goals regarding Commercial lending originations and budget
  • Interact with state/federal regulators in development, administration, and examination of Commercial, Small Business & SBA lending programs/activities
  • Ensure adherence to compliance of all business transactions (including Bank Secrecy Act, state and federal laws, company procedures/policies, integrity/ethics, and Privacy Act)
  • Recommend policy revisions to the Chief Lending Officer and Loan Committee
  • Provide strategic vision, deliver superior results, and tactfully execute direction of projects, goals, priorities, and activities pertaining to current and future business
  • Manage performance and monitor the performance management of both direct/indirect reports
  • Provide structural approach to ensure performance management is consistent, documented, respected, and followed regularly
  • Manage third party relationships such as third-party underwriters, loan servicers, brokers, and other vendors
  • Oversees large and/or complex commercial loans, including proceeds, content, acceptance, evaluation and release of collateral, and the maintenance of proper accounting records and controls
  • Counsels loan officers on proper commercial loan structuring, negotiation, procedures and business development
  • Conducts regular evaluations of the commercial loan portfolio as it relates to composition, liquidity, and credit quality as well as compliance with all applicable lending policies and regulations
  • Conducts complex credit analyses including those that involve multi-entity transactions with accrual accounting systems
  • Analyzes balance sheets, income statements, and cash flows of potential borrowers to ascertain creditworthiness
  • Makes credit presentations to senior management and the loan committee with recommendations for approval or denial of loan requests
  • Performs credit administration, monitoring, and due diligence review of various financial participation packages and loan originations
  • Ensures that all assigned loans are properly risk rated, assigned loss given defaults are correct and performance status assignments are proper
  • Complies with proper credit administration practices as outlined in the credit union’s policies and procedures
  • Responsible for developing new business in rapidly growing markets in addition to servicing existing agribusiness, commercial and real estate customers
  • Establishes business relationships with business leaders in the community and cultivates these relationships to expand lending opportunities
  • Makes and/or conveys decisions on loan approval, structure and pricing
  • Responsible for exercising credit risk management responsibilities on loans within area of responsibility
  • Assists in training less-senior loan officers and credit personnel to ensure quality loan services and attainment of the credit union’s goals
  • Represents the credit union at local community activities
  • Promotes the credit union by maintaining good public and member relations
  • Frequent interaction with borrowers and prospective borrowers, other inter-departmental staff and management
  • Occasional interaction with senior management
Qualifications/Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics or a related field, or equivalent experience and minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible lending experience, of which 5 years or more must be in commercial lending, involving credit extension, including the marketing, credit underwriting, administration and analysis of commercial credits and C&I loans. Minimum of 7 years successfully leading and managing sales and operations lending team.
  • Ability to perform intermediate to advanced-level accounting/financial analysis and ability to have advanced conversations with customer base and prospects regarding complex loan requests
