General Election Roster Available

The primary election in Wyoming decided more than three-quarters of the legislative seats.  With only 47 days until the general election the remaining, contested elections are few but important to the future direction of the Wyoming legislature and who will hold leadership positions.

The official general election candidate roster has been posted by the Secretary of State. A summary of the contested seats can be read here. One race not mentioned in the article that will also have a contested race due to an independent petition filed is House District 10. Representative John Eklund, representing eastern Laramie County handily won his seat in the primary with over seventy percent of the vote. However, independent Timothy Forbis filed a successful petition to run against Representative Eklund in the general. Eklund has been a credit union supporter and has voted for public funds legislation in the past.

With the change coming out of the primary and likely to be solidified in the general, announcements have started on who will be seeking leadership positions.  Those aligning with the Freedom Caucus had not previously held any leadership positions, including committee chairs. It is anticipated that the make up of all leadership positions, including committee leadership, will change considerably after the general election.

On the House side, Representative Chip Nieman, HD 1 has announced his intent to run for the Speaker of the House, Representative Jeremy Haroldson,  HD 4 representing northern Laramie County and Platte county, has been mentioned as taking a run Majority Floor Leader. On the Senate side Senator Larry Hicks, SD 11 has announced his intent to run for President of the Senate, Cheri Stienmetz,  SD 3 for  Vice President and Brian Boner, SD 2 for Majority Floor Leader.

The party caucuses are slated for November 23 when the parties will determine leadership candidates.
