Advocating for financial literacy education
Posted by Bobbie Frank on November 25, 2025
Members of Wyoming’s financial literacy workgroup, spearheaded by Wyoming’s Credit Unions, presented a session on the importance of financial literacy in Wyoming to the Wyoming School Board’s Association last week in Casper.
Members included Matt Ballou, WyHy FCU, Bobbie Frank, GoWest Credit Union Association, Michele DeHoff, Jonah Bank of Wyoming, and Jill Thompson, retired Natrona County financial literacy educator. Members of the financial literacy working group were joined by Dana Howie, Natrona County School District Board of Trustee.
The Natrona County School District adopted a stand-alone financial literacy course and graduation requirement in 2015. Based on 2022-2023 data, only nine Wyoming school districts require financial literacy for graduation, although several of the school districts provide some level of financial literacy education.
Attendees represented were school board members from across the state as well as a member of the Wyoming Board of Education (WBE).
The following day Bobbie Frank and Jill Thompson were invited to present to the WBE to discuss the importance of financial literacy education and encourage the board to look to the Natrona County curriculum to ensure Wyoming’s students get practical financial education as they move into adulthood. The WBE is currently undergoing social studies standards review and update, including discussing whether to incorporate financial literacy into those standards.
