In Rural Oregon, “Snowmaggedon” Doesn’t Stop Pacific Crest Federal Credit Union

Lakeview, Ore., boasts a population of 2,418 and a brand no one else can claim – “The Tallest Town in Oregon” – because of its 4,757-foot elevation. It’s also a bit of a tourist mecca located along the Outback Scenic Byway, attracting hikers, picnickers, mountain bikers, and campers in the summer and welcoming skiers in the winter.
But on the first weekend in February, everything came to a standstill. The area was pummeled by a fierce winter storm. By Monday morning, up to 20 inches of snow blanketed Lakeview. Trees and powerlines fell. Schools, along with government offices and financial institutions, closed. But not Pacific Crest Federal Credit Union. Their tiny but mighty team opened the Lakeview branch.
“February 3 was a significant payroll day for Social Security,” said Ange Deiter, Pacific Crest’s Lake County Manager, explaining that the Lakeview branch serves many members who are on Social Security.
It wasn’t easy. Almost no one, it seemed, could get out of their own driveways, including Deiter. Lakeview Branch Lead Lance McMahan came to the rescue, first shoveling his way out of his driveway, picking up Angie, and then helping to dig out the branch.
Doors that day were open from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. “In that time, we conducted 69 transactions that included drive-up, night drop, and in-branch interactions,” said Deiter. “It was the right thing to do. The digital age has brought 24/7 access to members’ accounts and multiple ways for them to access money, but not every member utilizes those options. Our mission is to provide opportunity to all.”
Pacific Crest’s homepage notes that the best part of living in that region is the people. “Find your people at Pacific Credit Federal Credit Union,” the site says.
Dozens of Lake County residents were so glad that they were able to do just that during a snowstorm not soon to be forgotten.
