Preview: National Governmental Affairs Conference: Advocating for Credit Unions in Washington, D.C.

Nearly 400 credit union leaders from the GoWest region are making their way to Washington, D.C., for the National Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC). This major event brings together advocates from across the country, providing a powerful platform for discussing policy issues that directly impact the future of credit unions. The conference is not just an opportunity to meet lawmakers—it’s a chance to strengthen relationships and make the case for credit unions as vital contributors to the economy and communities.

Wegner Awards and Recognition of Industry Leaders

The Wegner Awards are among the most prestigious in the credit union industry, recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the movement. In Monday night’s ceremony, Teri Robinson (Ironworkers USA) and Debbie Wege (BECU) will be celebrated as 2024 Wegner Award Winners. Their work has had a lasting impact on strengthening the credit union community and advocating for cooperative financial services that put people over profits.

Delegates’ Role in Advocacy

On Wednesday, attendees will head to Capitol Hill to meet with key elected officials and their staff to advocate for issues that affect credit unions. This year, attendees are equipped with fresh, compelling data to illustrate credit unions’ economic and community impact, designed to show lawmakers how credit unions serve both individuals and businesses in their districts.

Advocates will also be armed with Congressional District-level reports, which will provide lawmakers with a comprehensive view of credit unions’ economic influence on their districts. These reports include:

  • Direct member benefits, such as savings on loans and mortgages
  • Jobs created within the district through credit unions
  • The broader economic ripple effect credit unions have on local industries such as housing, groceries, and transportation

This real, district-specific information shows just how much credit unions contribute to the local economy. This data-driven approach ensures that advocacy efforts resonate with elected officials and reminds them of the vital role credit unions play in their communities.

While data is essential, sharing personal stories is equally important. Lawmakers are more likely to remember a powerful narrative that underscores why specific legislation matters to their constituents. Advocates are encouraged to share personal anecdotes that illustrate the everyday impact of credit unions on people’s lives—whether it’s helping a family purchase a home or supporting local businesses through loans.

The Importance of Credit Unions in the New Political Landscape

With a new administration in place and a dynamic shift in Washington’s political environment, credit unions are presented with both challenges and opportunities. For GoWest, this is a blank canvas to reshape the narrative around credit unions and their role in serving the public.

Many members of the GoWest delegation are strategically positioned in key committees that directly influence credit unions’ futures. Senator Mike Crapo (Idaho), the new Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, is a well-known advocate for the credit union movement. Serving alongside him is Senator Ron Wyden (Oregon), a longtime champion of credit unions and their tax-exempt status. Together, these two leaders, along with Senators Michael Bennet (Colorado) and Maria Cantwell (Washington), play a critical role in shaping legislation that impacts credit unions.

In the House, Janelle Bynum (Oregon) is a new member of the influential House Financial Services Committee, a big win for credit unions in the Pacific Northwest, as it’s been years since the region had a representative in this key position. Brittany Pettersen (Colorado), also on the committee, will continue to be a vital ally for credit unions moving forward.

Shifting Regulatory Landscape

In addition to legislative advocacy, GoWest is also focused on the regulatory landscape. Kyle Hauptman, the new Chair of the NCUA Board, has shifted the agency’s focus from consumer protection to ensuring credit union safety and soundness. While this shift brings changes, GoWest remains vigilant in advocating for credit unions to maintain their independent regulatory status.

Seizing the Moment

With everything under scrutiny in Washington, D.C., this is the perfect opportunity for credit union advocates to step up and make their voices heard. Whether meeting with elected officials in person or sharing important data and stories, it all contributes to advancing the credit union cause. These crucial conversations ensure that the credit union mission—to serve everyday people and provide financial services with a focus on cooperation, not profit—remains at the forefront of policymakers’ minds.
