Oregon Credit Unions Continue Long Tradition of Strong Advocacy

For more than 20 years, Oregon credit union advocates haven’t let anything stand in the way of their Day at the Capitol, and the 2025 celebration was no exception. They came from every corner of the state, and some braved the winter’s first heavy snowfall. But by the time the day got underway in Salem, the skies cleared. The advocacy force was nearly 200 strong and delegation sizes from the credit unions ranged from two people, to 37. All of them had a voice.

A key focus advocates messaged was seeking support of HB3188, affordable housing legislation. The bill would create a statewide loan program to expand home financing options for families at or below 130% of the median household income level.

House Speaker Julie Fahey (D-14) has long prioritized housing solutions and noted, “Credit unions play a huge role in helping buyers take that first step toward homeownership. ”

Senate Minority Leader David Bonham (R-26) planned on attending the event but received an invitation to attend a White House Executive Order signing ceremony — pretty important business. So, advocates instead welcomed Senator David Brock Smith (R-1). A lifetime credit union member, the senator said, “Credit unions are some of this state’s best financial institutions offering the residents of this state so much.”

Credit union leaders have always said that advocacy is not about political parties — it’s about people’s needs. That point was echoed by House Republican Leader Christine Drazen, who said as a legislator and particularly as the Leader, she’s listening to good ideas from any Oregonian, regardless of where in the state they’re from. Her remarks captured consumers’ frustrations with government and the economy, and she shared a sense of urgency about addressing those concerns.

“We cannot continue to approach the needs of Oregonians across our state, as if we’ve got 20 years,” Drazen said. “We’ve got to get this thing done.”

Honoring Legislators

Receiving the GoWest Credit Union Association Community Impact Award was Senate Kate Lieber (D-14). In presenting the honor, OnPoint Community Credit Union President and CEO Rob Stuart recognized Lieber’s “tireless advocacy for policy that strengthened our state.”

Said Senator Lieber, “We as a state are strong because we have you out there doing the development we really need.”
