Washington Legislators, Statewide officials Sworn in as Governor Ferguson Steps into New Role

It’s only day three of a long, 105-day session, but there has been no lack of action at the Washington State Capitol this week as lawmakers return to Olympia to address a number of significant issues. The process also sees a number of new legislators being sworn into office and four new statewide officials step into their roles.
On Tuesday, outgoing Governor Jay Inslee gave his farewell address and today newly sworn in Gov. Bob Ferguson officially took over as the state’s chief executive leader. Ferguson has already provided a framework for his budget priorities as lawmakers look to address the disconnect between current state spending and anticipated revenues, which was highlighted by a call across the board for spending cuts directing agency leaders to identify those savings, while investing in public safety, public schools, and housing.
In his inaugural address, Gov. Ferguson outlined a series of executive orders to be introduced today, one of which includes directing state agencies to review and make recommendations on how existing regulations can be modified, removed, or otherwise amended to expedite housing construction.
Also today, the Senate Business, Financial Institutions, and Trade Committee received a briefing by the State Department of Financial Institutions including an overview of the current landscape of credit unions and some of the various challenges, opportunities, and trends impacting financial services.
GoWest has been at the Capitol connecting with key lawmakers to share perspectives on multiple significant issues. Much more to come this week and we’ll see lawmakers return to the normal cadence of committees and floor work next week after the various first week festivities wrap up.
Join us to advocate credit union priorities at Credit Union Day at the Capitol on Feb. 11. Information is available online.
