GoWest Meets with Congressional Leaders and Candidate in Colorado

The GoWest Advocacy Team was invited to join several members of the Democratic Caucus as they met in Colorado this past weekend. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO-1) has hosted this event for Members of Congress the weekend after the new year for the past decade. Several members of the Colorado Congressional delegation were on hand as were members from California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Washington State.

Our team was able to have in-depth conversations with several members of the delegation on credit union policy and election outlooks as well as issues that will be on the docket for the remainder of the 118th Congress. Our team had the opportunity to meet with the following members of the GoWest delegation while attending the event:

  • Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO-1)
  • Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO-2)
  • Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO-6)
  • Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-CO-7)
  • Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA-1)

Before heading to the DeGette events, members of the GoWest Advocacy Team joined GoWest Board Chairman Todd Marksberry to meet with one of the Republican Congressional candidates running in Colorado’s 3rd District, Jeff Hurd. Mr. Hurd is an Attorney from the Grand Junction area, and he is working diligently to introduce himself to industries and leaders that are making an impact in the 3rd District. He was eager to learn more about credit unions and immediately understood our member-owned, cooperative structure, having worked for rural cooperatives in his legal practice. We spent quite a bit of time getting to know Jeff, and we will continue to connect with him and other candidates, as we diligently work to get to know the leading candidates that are vying for seats in our GoWest Congressional delegation.

The conversations with the elected Members of Congress set the stage for the in-depth meetings we will hold with Congressional representatives and U.S. Senators during the National Governmental Affairs Conference in March. The Meeting with candidate Hurd was also an excellent opportunity to familiarize him with the credit union difference, ahead of the 2024 election cycle.
