Unitus Community Credit Union Places Second in National Awards for Philosophy in Action

The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) recently honored Unitus Community Credit Union, based in Portland, Oregon, with second place in the prestigious Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award.

The award recognizes credit unions that do an extraordinary job incorporating credit union philosophy into daily operations.

The impact Unitus has had on the Hispanic community was honored with this award. Through intentional efforts ranging from hiring more bilingual and bicultural staff to selecting inclusive community partners, Unitus is focused on reaching members of the community who have been underserved by traditional financial institutions.

“Congratulations to this year’s winners for the exemplary work done for their communities and the members they serve. These leaders have made it their mission as credit union advocates to promote financial well-being,” said CUNA President and CEO Jim Nussle. “Each winner has demonstrated a passion in helping others, advancing their communities, and making a difference. I applaud their commitment to the credit union movement.”

Unitus has long been a pioneer in fostering financial literacy, offering inclusive banking solutions, and actively participating in community initiatives. The credit union’s innovative approach to member engagement, combined with a genuine commitment to social responsibility, has set it apart in the financial industry.

“Our team at Unitus is truly honored to receive the second-place recognition in the national Louise Herring Awards from CUNA. This accomplishment reflects our ongoing commitment to empowering our members and making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve,” said Unitus President and CEO Steven Stapp.

“We are truly honored to be recognized for our inclusive financial practices,” said Unitus Community Development Manager Aimee Berg. “From providing loans to members with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to dedicating 30% of our giving funds to communities of color, Unitus is making a positive impact in our Hispanic and immigrant communities.”
