Senator Cantwell (D – WA) serves as the Chair of the Senate Commerce, Science, & Transportation Committee. The hearing, is scheduled for next Wednesday and is titled “Protecting Consumer Privacy.” However, it is not anticipated that specific legislation will be considered, but rather a focused on standing up a privacy and data security bureau at the FTC. Currently that concept is included in the House $3.5 trillion social spending package. Senator Cantwell was instrumental in the provision’s inclusion in the House bill, having called for a dedicated bureau as part of the privacy legislation she introduced in 2019.
