Idaho Credit Union Day at the Capitol Reinforces Trusted Partnerships and Real Impact

Nearly 80 credit union advocates from 18 Idaho credit unions convened in Boise on Jan. 21 for Credit Union Day at the Capitol. They shared with lawmakers how they serve 1.4 million of their constituents in the Gem State and reinforced the value of long-standing, trusted relationships at the Statehouse—and the real results they deliver.

Speakers throughout the day included Phil McGrane, Secretary of State, Salvador Cruz, Financial Institutions Bureau Chief for the Idaho Department of Finance, Kelly Anthon, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and Alex LaBeau, President of the Idaho Association of Commerce & Industry.

The event strengthened connections with policymakers and reaffirmed credit unions’ role as trusted partners in solving Idaho’s biggest challenges, particularly housing.

Idaho’s credit unions have provided $7.3 billion in home loans, including $760 million for first-time homebuyers, along with more than $192,000 in down payment assistance—helping families turn the dream of homeownership into reality. Families don’t just come to credit unions for a mortgage; they come for a future.

Congratulations to Mike Schenck President & CEO of Westmark Credit Union, who was named the 2025 Idaho Credit Union Advocate of the Year. He demonstrated leadership in action—leading the State Issues Working Group, testifying in support of elder abuse and fraud legislation, and investing in advocacy to ensure credit unions have a strong voice. We also recognized Idaho’s 2025 Top of the Hill credit unions, Connections Credit Union and Northwest Christian Credit Union, for their leadership in advancing advocacy at both the state and federal levels and engaging their teams to strengthen the credit union operating environment for members and communities.

As not-for-profit cooperatives, credit unions bring a collaborative, people-first approach to housing affordability, working alongside community partners and state leaders to deliver practical solutions. That approach resonated throughout the day and reflects why more than 1.4 million Idahoans—nearly 72 percent of the state—choose a credit union.

By staying engaged and leading with solutions and credibility, Idaho’s credit unions continue to advance and protect their mission—remaining vigilant against ongoing threats like interchange and debanking proposals.

The work continues, and Idaho’s credit unions are ready.
