Wyoming Governor Releases 2027-2028 Budget

Governor Gordon released what he has termed “The Essentials” budget this week. In his budget message, the Governor acknowledged that Wyoming was built by pioneers who understood the need to steward Wyoming’s resources and that today’s citizens enjoy the fruits of their wisdom in the income generated from the investments in our permanent trusts.
For the first time in history, Wyoming’s investment earnings are expected to be the largest source of income, at $1.86 billion. These earnings allow Wyoming to maintain a low tax base while continuing to provide essential services.
The Governor highlighted four core principles he focused on in preparing this biennium budget:
- Protect Wyoming citizens and ensure their future.
- Support core industries, grow new ones, and expand opportunities.
- Maintain and improve effective and efficient government.
- Respect the principle that the government is best when it is closest to the people.
The Joint Appropriations Committee will begin a review of the Governor’s proposed budget on December 1 and will meet for three weeks in December and January. Freedom Caucus members of the House Appropriations Committee have announced their intent to cut the budget to pre-pandemic spending levels. The budget session will convene on February 9.
