Colorado Credit Union Reaches Over 400 Future Financial Leaders Through Bite of Reality Events

In 2024, Littleton, Colo.-based Colorado Credit Union expanded its commitment to financial education by hosting seven Bite of Reality events across three partner schools, engaging more than 400 total students. The events were made possible through the contribution of 29 credit union staff and Board Members who volunteered over 90 hours, delivering impactful financial education experiences to students. These events were made possible by a grant from the GoWest Foundation.
Bite of Reality is a hands-on, app-based simulation designed for high school students, giving them a glimpse into real-world financial situations. Hosted by Colorado Credit Union staff, the events teach students how to budget for basic needs, wants, and unexpected costs.
“Bite of Reality was a lot of fun!” shared Brighton High School teacher Jennifer Vanderhye. “The kids had a good time figuring out what to spend their money on, and a few of them discovered that you can’t just buy everything you want because they had a limited amount of income. I think it was really worth inviting [Colorado Credit Union] into the classroom.”
The Bite of Reality simulation immerses students in a day-in-the-life experience of managing an adult’s financial responsibilities. Students are assigned a fictional occupation, salary, credit score, partner, child, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. They then navigate various stations to “purchase” housing, transportation, food, clothing, and other essentials, all while managing their budget. The simulation also includes a credit union station to guide students with their financial needs.
“Bite of Reality offers students a safe and engaging way to practice financial literacy, learn from their mistakes, and improve their decision-making skills before stepping into the real world,” explained Teagan Werden, Colorado Credit Union’s community impact manager. “Expanding this program to new schools like Brighton High School is an exciting milestone, and the support of the GoWest Foundation has been fundamental in empowering students with the tools they need for lifelong financial success.”
Colorado Credit Union’s dedication to financial education continues to inspire and empower students, preparing them for a future of informed and confident financial decision-making.
