Candidates announce across Wyoming

More election announcements ahead of the May 16 official filing period have hit the news in the past few weeks. Recently Cat Urbigkit, Sublette County (pictured) announced she will run for the House seat being vacated by Speaker of the House Albert Sommers. Urbigkit is a life-long Wyoming resident and a rancher and author.  She will face Mike Schmid, a La Barge oilman and Freedom Caucus aligned candidate who ran against Sommers and lost in the 2022 election.

Speaker Sommers announced he is considering a run for Senate District 14, a seat currently held by Fred Baldwin, who announced his retirement.

Ivan Posey, a Democrat and a Eastern Shoshone educator announced a run for House District 33, currently held by Freedom Caucus aligned Sarah Penn (R-Lander).

Republican and Casper native, Chris Dresang has announced he will run against Tony Locke for House District 35. Dresang is a Natrona County school administrator.

With Senator Affie Ellis’ announcement she will not run again for her Laramie County based Senate District, Representative Jared Olsen, current House Majority Whip and a Cheyenne attorney, has announced he will run for her seat. Seth Ulvestad a Republican new-comer and analyst for the Department of Enterprise Services will run for Olsen’s seat.

Former Representative J.D. Williams, a Niobrara County rancher has announced he will run again for House District 2, a seat he lost in the 2022 election to Representative Allen Slagle, a rancher from Weston County, by 12 votes.
