Beginning Pay Range: $25.64 – $32.05 per hour

OCCU is looking for an experienced Financial Crimes Specialist to join our growing and high performing team! The Financial Crimes Specialist provides support to the organization and BSA & Fraud Prevention to ensure applicable rules and regulations, loss prevention strategies and credit union goals are met.

Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this position require prioritizing and completing all assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner, adjusting for changing priorities and availability of resources and demonstrating initiative in identifying additional job-related tasks to be completed when time permits. These duties are a representative example of position expectations. Actual duties assigned may vary and change depending on the business needs of the department and OCCU.

  • Research all branch and department reports of potential fraud, identity theft and money laundering activity and respond accordingly.
  • Act as the liaison between the Credit Union and Law Enforcement by responding to requests for surveillance and other documentation regarding credit union incidents.
  • Work with Law Enforcement preparing for Financial Crimes court cases. This includes creating police reports, working directly with Law Enforcement and District Attorneys in preparation for trial and testifying at Grand Jury and criminal trials.
  • Assist members with fraud situations, including instances of check fraud, debit card fraud, ATM fraud, internet banking fraud and ACH fraud. Ensure that claims are tracked and processed within Regulation E compliance and timeframes.
  • Research and respond to cases of potential Identity Theft, ensuring that proper documentation is received to prove identity and that any discrepancies are reported appropriately.
  • Assist front-line staff by reviewing account and credit applications for instances of potential Identity Theft and fraud scenarios. Make independent decisions regarding the approval or denial of applications, based on potential financial impact.
  • Work with the Loss Prevention & BSA Manager, as well as other business units, to ensure that proper mitigation strategies are in place to prevent, deter and detect instances of fraud and financial crimes, limiting the financial impact of fraud to the Credit Union.
  • Receive and process counterfeit currency, ensuring that proper reports are made to the Secret Service and local Law Enforcement.
  • Ensure that all Currency Transaction Reports are filed accurately and timely. Review internal host reports to ensure that all applicable transactions are properly reported to FinCEN.
  • Ensure that Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) are filed accurately and timely. Review all internal Suspicious Activity Referral Forms to independently determine whether a SAR is warranted. Review Anti-Money Laundering (AML) alerts within the AML software and file reports as necessary. 
  • Ensure that screening of all applicable watch lists is completed, including all OFAC and 314(a) lists. Research and respond to all potential matches within regulatory timeframes.
  • Provide support to Enterprise Risk & Administration, credit union business units and credit union goals.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality regarding all sensitive, confidential and proprietary credit union information.
  • Stay abreast of and follow all current laws and regulations. Attend applicable trainings/seminars as necessary and complete all applicable training.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with key contacts in the community such as other financial institution personnel, law enforcement officials and industry experts.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

  • Three to five years of similar or related experience.


High school diploma, GED or equivalent is required. Four-year college degree preferred.

  • Willing to obtain and maintain applicable certifications or training while in the position.

An equivalent combination of experience and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position will be considered in lieu of the outlined requirements.

Work Environment: Office-related work is primarily conducted in a temperature-controlled office environment. Our office spaces include traditional office lighting (including fluorescent lighting), as well as shared office spaces and facilities that result in consistent and frequent noise (moderate and often louder than ambient noise), conversations among employees and/or members, interruptions and other similar distractions.

Work Hours: This job can typically be done within a Monday through Friday schedule; however, based on events going on there will be times when evening and weekend work is required with little or no notice.
