Red Alert Playbook Helps Credit Union Teams Prepare Before a Crisis
Posted by Jordan Beyer on September 24, 2026
Credit unions are strongest when they move together, especially in moments when advocacy, reputation, member trust, and public perception are all moving quickly. A fast-moving issue can create pressure for leadership, advocacy, communications, and internal response contacts to respond at the same time, often with very little room to pause and build a plan from scratch.
That is why GoWest has developed Red Alert Playbook resources to help credit unions prepare before an issue becomes urgent.
The resources were recently introduced at Executives@Coeur d’Alene through a real-time crisis preparedness exercise, giving CEOs and executive teams the opportunity to think through how their credit union would respond in a high-pressure advocacy, media, or reputational scenario. The exercise reinforced an important point: readiness is not just about having the right message. It is about making sure the right people know their roles, understand how to coordinate, and can move together when timing matters.
The Red Alert Playbook is designed to provide a shared starting point for that work. It includes guidance credit unions can use to think through internal response roles, message alignment, member communications, grassroots activation, policymaker outreach, media response, and coordination with GoWest. The intent is not to prescribe a one-size-fits-all response, but to help credit union teams prepare for the decisions and conversations that often need to happen quickly during a Red Alert moment.
We encourage credit union teams to review the Red Alert Playbook with colleagues who would be part of a rapid response effort, including leadership, advocacy, grassroots, political, communications, and internal response contacts. Consider whether the materials help clarify roles, strengthen coordination, and identify what additional tools or templates would make your credit union more ready to act.
When a Red Alert moment happens, timing matters. Preparation now can help credit unions respond quickly, confidently, and in alignment when it matters most.
