Board Chairs Lean In on Leadership, Strategy, and Governance

Board chairs and CEOs from across the GoWest region came together on May 28 for the latest Board Chair Virtual Roundtable, a collaborative forum designed to strengthen governance and support effective board leadership.

The session created space for peer connection and practical discussion, helping board chairs stay informed on emerging governance topics while exchanging ideas to better support their credit unions in an evolving environment.

Karen Roch, President and CEO of Credit Union West, set the tone by sharing her long history in the Credit Union Movement and her experience working alongside boards. She emphasized the importance of keeping boards focused on strategy — not drifting into operations — and avoiding “autopilot” governance by remaining intentional, forward-looking, and engaged.

Throughout the conversation, several key themes emerged that reflect both the challenges and opportunities facing today’s credit union boards:

Trust, Clarity, and Alignment
Participants reinforced that a strong partnership between the Board Chair and CEO is foundational to effective governance. Clear expectations, open communication, and mutual trust help ensure alignment on priorities and strengthen overall leadership.

Staying Strategic
Many chairs are intentionally adjusting meeting structures and agendas to allow more space for strategic dialogue. Shifting away from routine operational updates enables boards to focus on long-term vision and future-focused decision-making.

Board Packets and Meeting Design
Attendees shared thoughtful approaches to improving board materials — from refining the length of board packets to structuring content in ways that encourage engagement, discussion, and informed decision-making.

Board Succession and Recruitment
The group explored strategies to build strong, sustainable boards, including associate board member programs, onboarding practices, and the role of term limits in balancing continuity with fresh perspectives.

Navigating Change
Many participants have recently led their organizations through significant transitions, including CEO succession, mergers, and rebranding efforts, underscoring the critical role of strong governance during periods of change.

Why It Matters
The Board Chair Virtual Roundtable is more than a one-time conversation — it’s an ongoing opportunity for board leaders to learn from one another, test ideas, and gain practical insights they can bring back to their own boards.

By participating, Board Chairs gain:

  • Peer perspective from leaders facing similar challenges
  • Timely insights on governance trends and best practices
  • Actionable ideas to strengthen board effectiveness and CEO partnership
  • A trusted network to navigate change and opportunity

As credit unions continue to evolve, strong governance and engaged board leadership remain essential. The Roundtable helps ensure board chairs are equipped to lead with confidence.
