Wyoming Primary Candidate Slate

Last Friday was the last day for candidates to file for office for the upcoming August 18 primary. A full roster is available on the Secretary of State’s website.

The United States Senate and House seat, all top five elected officials, eighteen odd numbered Senate districts and all 62 House seats are up for election.

The US Senate seat, vacated with the retirement of Cynthia Lummis, will see five Republican candidates and two Democrat candidates. As had been reported, Congresswoman Harriet Hageman did file to run for the Senate. She will face four other Republican challengers in the primary.

The US House seat is a crowded race with ten Republican candidates and two Democrat candidates. Aggressive campaigning for this seat has been ramping up over the past few months.

The Governor’s race includes four Republican candidates and one Democrat. The Wyoming Credit Union Political Action Committee recently delivered support to Eric Barlow for his campaign for Governor. The Secretary of State race has five Republican candidates and one Democrat. Current State Auditor Kristi Racines will face no opposition in the primary or general. Freedom Caucus House member Scott Smith, Goshen County, is challenging Curt Meier for State Treasurer. Five total candidates threw their name in the hat for Superintendent of Public Instruction, three Republican and two Democrats, including two current House members Steve Harshman and Tom Kelly.

As the Freedom Caucus contingent attempts to gain a majority in the Senate, several House members will be running for Senate seats.

Top races to watch include Senate District One where current Senator Ogden Driskill, former President of the Senate, will face primary challenger, current Speaker of the House Chip Neiman. This is anticipated to be one of the most contentious races of the primary. Current Freedom Caucus House members vying for Senate seats in addition to Neiman include Angelos, Hoeft, Pendergraft, and Singh.

Senators not returning will include Senator Hutchings, Pappas, Hicks, Laursen, Biteman, Barlow, and Landen. On the House side representatives not returning include Representatives Neiman, Angelos, Smith, Brown, Harshman, Tarver and Singh.

Of the eighteen Senate seats up for election, four incumbents will face no primary or general election challengers including Senators Steinmetz, Rothfuss, Jones and Gierau. On the House side the following will face no challengers in the primary or general, JD Williams, Haroldson, Styvar, Thayer, Yin, McKay, Byron, Posey, Ottman, Wylie, O’Toole.
