STCU Pledges $350,000 To Assist with Food Security

With families and individuals facing urgent needs, STCU is focusing on food security for its annual Season of Giving and is encouraging employees and community members to contribute too.

The credit union has set aside at least $300,000 for surprise donations to dozens of food assistance programs throughout Eastern Washington, North Idaho, and Northeastern Oregon.

STCU is also encouraging community members to help by offering matching grants to any donations made to the Here for Good Foundation in November.

Separate from the foundation matching grants, STCU is offering to match donations, up to $50,000, from STCU employees to any nonprofit organization, including those that assist with food security.

STCU President and CEO Lindsey Myhre has witnessed the growing demand as board president for Partners INW. The Spokane Valley-based non-profit provides essential services, including food assistance to more than 100,000 individuals annually in Northeastern Washington and North Idaho.

“Thousands of our neighbors are facing uncertainty about putting nutritious food on the table, just as winter and the holidays are approaching,” Myhre said. “STCU wants to help, and to set an example for others who are able to help.”

Eric Williams, Community Partnerships Director at Second Harvest Inland Northwest, said that for many families, wages haven’t kept pace with the cost of living. His organization distributes food to 250 partnering non-profits throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho counties.

“They see a lot more working families now,” Williams said. “Inflation hammered people.”

Laura Thayer, Associate Vice President for Philanthropy and Campaign Engagement at Eastern Washington University, said inflation is putting pressure on students’ education budgets. “When our community steps up with support for the EWU food pantry, that generosity ensures students have the reliable, nutritious food they need to stay focused on their classes and successfully earn their degree,” she said.

Second Harvest, Partners INW, and the EWU food pantry are among more than 40 organizations that have either already received or will receive grants to help with their critical food assistance programs.

Season of Giving is STCU’s annual tradition of making year-end donations to community organizations. However, giving is a year-round effort for the credit union and its separate Here for Good Foundation. Visit stcu.org/giving for more information.

Double your donation

Through November, STCU will match all donations, up to $50,000 total, to the Here for Good Foundation. All funds raised in November will go to organizations that assist with food security. Go to stcu.org/foundation for more information and to donate.
