Turning Up the Volume on Credit Union Advocacy
January 15, 2025
From the beltway to all six statehouses in the GoWest region, it’s officially “Advocacy Season.” While advocating for credit union priorities is ongoing throughout the year, at no time is it busier – and more opportune for your engagement – than when legislative bodies are in session. The 119th Congress was sworn in on Jan. 3, and state legislative sessions are underway in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, and Wyoming. Oregon’s session begins Jan. 21.
The environment is always changing. Your voice needs to be heard.
Not only will a new president take office later this month, but in the House and Senate, and in all state legislatures, there are new faces.
“While maintaining close relationships with sitting elected officials is critical to the advocacy mission, there is also a golden opportunity to meet newly elected officials and help them to understand the credit union difference,” said Jennifer Wagner, GoWest Credit Union Association’s Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer. “Many may already be credit union members, but most don’t truly appreciate yet how the not-for-profit, cooperative structure offers a unique level of financial services to their constituents.”
Credit Union Day at the Capitol events in all six states, and the America’s Credit Unions’ National Governmental Affairs Conference provide immediate opportunities for advocates to come together and showcase, in big numbers, that credit unions are engaged in advocacy. Advocates are offered training and all the materials they need for meeting with legislators, so they will be comfortable and effective. Wyoming’s Credit Union Day at the Capitol is scheduled for Jan. 16. Other CU Day at the Capitol events are still open for registration, and credit unions are encouraged to bring as many team members as possible. From experienced advocates to newer employees, all are welcome and have a perspective to share. More information about this season’s in-person events can be found on the GoWest website:
