Unitus Community Credit Union announced that Denetta Monk has been elected to its Board of Directors. Monk serves as the Associate Vice President of Programs for Urban League of Portland. With more than 15 years’ experience, Monk has a history of building a culture of equity and inclusion for students, families, employees, and community members.
In her role at Urban League of Portland, Monk oversees contracts, grants, and agency programs inclusive of Housing, Workforce Development, Empowerment, and Health and Senior Services. She’s held several roles during her nearly eight years at Urban League, including Director of Housing Programs and Housing Program Manager. In 2023, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek appointed Monk to the state’s Racial Justice Council Housing and Homelessness Committee.
“We are thrilled to welcome Denetta to the Unitus Board of Directors,” said Board Chair Matthew Mičetić. “Her experience and advocacy work bring a perspective to the Board that will benefit not only our members, but also our community development efforts. Her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout her career brings an important lens to our decision-making responsibilities.”
“As a member, I see first-hand how the credit union works to provide inclusive financial services in our communities,” explained Monk. “In my professional role, I’ve worked closely with Unitus to pilot the Azie app with Urban League clients. I share the Unitus value of lifting and empowering historically underserved communities to help them with their financial journeys.”
Monk has led racial justice advocacy and initiatives to increase diversity in funds that support communities of color. She is a certified social worker and community health worker. Monk has held a previous board position with Bradley Angle, a nonprofit that supports victims of domestic violence. She is currently an executive board member at Parenting with Intent, a nonprofit committed to building strong connections for healthy communities.
“I welcome Denetta to the Board of Directors,” said Steven Stapp, President and CEO of Unitus Community Credit Union. “I’m eager to learn from and work alongside her for the benefit of our members and communities.”
Monk will serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors.
