The Conversations Behind Effective Governance: Upcoming Roundtables for Board Chairs and Board Liaisons

This August, GoWest is bringing credit union board leaders together for two interactive virtual roundtables designed to foster peer learning, collaboration, and fresh perspectives on today’s governance challenges and opportunities.

Board Chair Virtual Roundtable — Tuesday, Aug. 25, 12-1 p.m. PT / 1-2 p.m. MT

Board Liaison Virtual Roundtable — Wednesday, Aug. 26, 12-1 p.m. PT / 1-2 p.m. MT

These sessions provide a confidential forum for board representatives from across the region to exchange ideas, discuss emerging issues, share successes, and learn from one another’s experiences.

For Board Chairs, the Roundtable is more than a one-time discussion. It’s an ongoing opportunity to gain practical insights, test ideas, and build a network of peers facing many of the same opportunities and challenges. Participants benefit from candid conversations, timely governance insights, and actionable strategies they can bring back to their own boards.

Sessions focus on topics including:

  • Board succession planning
  • Governance roles and responsibilities
  • Developments in AI, advocacy, and financial literacy

The value of these conversations was clear during the inaugural Board Chair Roundtable in May. Participants explored the importance of trust, clarity, and alignment between the board chair and CEO, while also discussing ways to create more space for strategic and future-focused dialogue during board meetings.

Other key themes included board packet design and information flow, with participants sharing ideas for improving engagement and decision-making. Thanks to those discussions, GoWest is developing a sample board packet resource that will be available later this year. Board recruitment, succession planning, and term limits also emerged as important topics for maintaining effective, forward-looking boards.
