Bite of Reality: Free Financial Education Resource Now Available in Spanish for Credit Unions

Financial education is one of the most effective ways credit unions support their youngest members — a healthy relationship with money early on can change the trajectory of someone’s life.

The GoWest Foundation supports this effort by providing credit unions with Bite of Reality, an app-based platform that helps students navigate the most practical financial challenges they are likely to face in adulthood.

During financial fairs hosted by credit unions in partnership with schools and community organizations, students spend up to 90 minutes simulating real-life decisions around housing, transportation, food, and everyday expenses for an assigned character. Along the way, they encounter pushy car dealers and unexpected costs — just as they would in the real world. Credit union staff are on hand throughout the experience to answer questions and offer guidance as students work through these scenarios.

With an astounding 16,204 participants at 172 fairs in 2025 alone, the program continues to be a powerful, hands-on tool for engaging youth and young adults in real-world financial decision-making — and an exciting new enhancement has recently been added.

The Bite of Reality app is now available in Spanish as well as English, helping to expand accessibility and reach within the communities GoWest credit unions serve.

La aplicación Bite of Reality ya está disponible en español. Esto ayudará a ampliar su accesibilidad y alcance dentro de su comunidad.

Anyone who currently has the app can simply update to the latest version to access all new features.

Any credit union that would like the updated Spanish kit materials mailed to them should contact Nayab Abbasi, Foundation Strategic Initiatives Manager, by Jan. 23.

Credit unions interested in using Bite of Reality in their communities can apply for a free kit HERE. Bite of Reality can be used in a variety of settings — schools, community events, branch activations, or partner-led programming — and the Foundation team is happy to help you strategize on how it could fit into your credit union’s outreach or financial education efforts.
