WY Joint Appropriations Committee Kicks off Hearings

This morning the Joint Appropriations Committee (JAC) kicked off its budget hearings with Governor Mark Gordon presenting his proposed 2027-2028 biennium budget. The Governor highlighted that the state’s investment portfolio will generate over $913 million for the general fund offsetting the tax burden on Wyoming citizens.

The Governor proposes adding $250 million to the Permanent Mineral Trust Fund and the Common School Permanent Land Fund. And additional $210 million in two additional accounts including strategic investment and school foundation program, leaving $462 million in available surplus.

An important highlight the Governor stressed in his remarks is that 76 percent of the state’s $11.1 billion budget goes out to Wyoming’s communities, schools, hospitals, and local providers.

Freedom Caucus members of the Joint Appropriations Committee had announced earlier their intent to cut the state budget to pre-2020 levels.

The JAC will meet for the next two weeks with the top five elected and all state agencies presenting their budgets. The agency budget hearings will continue the week of January 5, and the Committee will begin marking up the budget the week of January 12.
