Administration Nominates Levenbach for CFPB Director

The Trump administration has nominated Stuart Levenbach, a senior official at the Office of Management and Budget, as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Levenbach acted as chief of staff of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration during Trump’s first term. This move appears aimed at extending the tenure of acting director Russ Vought, who has been leading efforts to significantly scale back the agency.
Since February, Vought has frozen many CFPB programs and announced plans to eliminate nearly 90% of its staff. Additionally, the CFPB recently filed a notice that the Bureau will only be legally funded through December 31, potentially affecting rulemaking and operations timelines. These developments raise questions about the near-term future of the CFPB.
If the agency’s operations are reduced or shut down, compliance responsibilities could shift to other regulators, or leave gaps that increase risk for consumers. Senator Elizabeth Warren has criticized the move, warning it could benefit large corporations at the expense of communities.
GoWest will continue to support regulatory right-sizing, such as the recently proposed Section 1071 rule, as we monitor leadership changes at the CFPB.
