It was honor to acknowledge two Oregon credit unions during our annual awards dinner at MAXX with the Top of the Hill award. Oregon State Credit Union and InRoads Credit Union exceeded in setting the tone for Advocacy engagement in both grassroots and political activities.
These award winners were successful with proactive efforts to mobilize members, staff, and stakeholders in support of legislative, regulatory, and community policies that protect and advance the credit union movement. Their engagement is multifaceted and excels in ongoing relationship-building with policymakers. This success with effective advocacy engagement not only shapes favorable policy and regulation but also boosts member satisfaction, retention, and activity within the credit union, and helps preserve the core values and benefits of credit unions, such as the tax-exempt status, and community-focused service.
Oregon State Credit Union is actively involved in advocacy efforts to support its members and the broader credit union movement throughout the state. The organization’s advocacy includes engaging in state and federal government discussions, supporting financial literacy initiatives, fostering inclusive financial access, and helping shape legislation that benefits members and communities.
Oregon State Credit Union participates in legislative advocacy both individually and through collective efforts with other credit unions in the state. One example is the support and lobbying for affordable housing bills and financial education improvements, aiming to make homeownership and financial skills more accessible to Oregonians. They have worked with state legislators and advocacy groups to pass measures such as Senate Bill 3, which requires personal financial education for high school graduation.
Political advocacy is a long-standing tradition at Oregon State Credit Union leading our state and region in PAC fundraising and setting the tone for payroll deduction and staff engagement. This credit union has receives national acknowledgement for their efforts and support
When Nathan Cox took over as President/CEO of InRoads Credit Union, they were engaged in working with local elected officials and meeting with them during the Days at the Capitol. Their legislative and community activities have increased to showcase advocacy through community support, financial education, grants, and charitable initiatives designed to empower local organizations, small businesses, and individuals in the communities it serves.
To further support for local economic development, InRoads established a small business grant program, offering financial grants and resources for small enterprises in Washington County, Oregon. This program delivers direct aid to help entrepreneurs grow, create jobs, and sustain thriving local economies—a major advocacy focus for the credit union. Advocacy at InRoads also centers on promoting financial literacy and wellness. Efforts include delivering financial education in schools, organizing financial reality fairs for high school students, and funding initiatives via the InRoads Credit Union Foundation, which prioritizes grants for projects supporting financial wellness in the region.
Overall, InRoads Credit Union’s advocacy encompasses financial empowerment, charitable giving, small business support, and active local involvement with state and federal elected officials, with a deep commitment to improving the quality of life and financial health of the communities they serve.
Congratulations to both Oregon State and InRoads Credit Unions for this well deserved award!
