Arizona Legislature Adjourns Sine Die

After 169 days in session, the Arizona 57th Legislature – First Regular Session – adjourned on Friday, June 27, at 1:00 PM. The final weeks were anything but relaxing for lawmakers.

The Senate spent weeks negotiating a bipartisan budget with Governor Hobbs and her staff, only for the House of Representatives to introduce a Republican-only budget. In response, the Senate passed its bipartisan budget and sent it to the House, where the majority leadership declined to bring it up for a vote. As the deadline for a potential government shutdown loomed, the House introduced a continuation budget. The Senate voted on both House budgets, and Governor Hobbs vetoed both immediately.

Eventually, the House adopted minor amendments and voted on the Senate’s bipartisan budget late on Thursday, June 26. Governor Hobbs signed the budget Friday afternoon, narrowly avoiding a government shutdown and bringing the session to a close.

This year, more than 1,700 bills were introduced, with 439 ultimately passed. Governor Hobbs now has 10 days, excluding weekends, to take action on the remaining bills on her desk. In surprising news, the Senate Republican caucus met in closed session to replace Senator Shamp as Majority Leader with Senator Kavanagh in response to her role in how the budget process played out.
