Colorado Credit Union Brings Real-World Financial Education to Local Students

This spring, Colorado Credit Union hosted three Bite of Reality events at partner schools, providing nearly 100 students with valuable financial skills that will last a lifetime.
Bite of Reality is an engaging, app-based simulation designed for high school students, offering a hands-on experience with real-world financial situations. Led by Colorado Credit Union staff, the events taught students how to navigate budgeting, manage savings, and make informed financial decisions. With the help of ten dedicated Colorado Credit Union staff volunteers, the events brought these important lessons to life, giving students the tools they need to build a solid financial foundation.
“It is a huge benefit to have Colorado Credit Union in for our financial literacy classes,” said Rachel Caliga, a teacher at Dakota Ridge High School. “Students get to hear the information from another voice in fun, interactive ways to support the learning they are receiving in their day-to-day classes.”
The Bite of Reality simulation allows students to experience the financial challenges of adulthood by assigning them a fictional occupation, salary, credit score, family responsibilities, and debt. They then visit various stations to make choices about housing, transportation, food, clothing, and more — while learning to balance their budget and make smart financial decisions. A credit union station is also included to offer financial guidance throughout the experience.
“We’re excited to continue working with local schools to bring practical financial education to students,” said Teagan Werden, Community Impact Manager at Colorado Credit Union. “Together, we’re equipping the next generation with the tools they need to succeed financially.”
The success of these events would not have been possible without the support of our school partners and the generous support from the GoWest Foundation. Through this collaboration, we are helping to build strong financial futures for students in our community.
