Economists: Taxing Credit Unions Would Adversely Impact Consumers and the Economy

Loss of the credit union tax exemption would result in direct losses to consumers, and would have far reaching consequences for the overall economy, according to an independent analysis released this week.
Robert Feinberg, an economist from American University, and Douglas Meade, from the firm, Interindustry Economic Research Fund, Inc. released a detailed study documenting how credit unions’ unique cooperative structure benefits the economy, and detailing specific evidence loss of the tax exemption would have.
The study is being shared in Congress this week, as thousands of credit union advocates – including 400 from the GoWest region – are in the beltway for the annual national Governmental Affairs Conference. Read more here.
