Arizona DIFI Sunset Review

It is Sunset Review time for the Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions (DIFI) in Arizona. Every few years each state agency will undergo an audit from the Office of the Auditor General. These audits ensure that state agencies are held accountable and fulfilling their mission. The audit is presented to the Legislature in each chamber during a Committee of Reference where legislators will decide if the agency should receive a recommendation of continuation, revisions, consolidation, or termination.

The Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions had its sunset review hearing in the House of Representatives on January 14th and in the Senate on January 27th. In both hearings, DIFI received a recommendation of continuation with revisions. This means both Chambers agree that DIFI should continue to exist but that the department needs to revise its operations according to the Auditor General’s report.

Following the Committee of Reference, state agencies must collaborate with legislators to propose a bill reflecting the committee’s recommendation. Representative Livingston introduced House Bill 2210, which calls for DIFI’s continuation until its next sunset review in eight years.

The bill has been referred to the Commerce Committee, but a hearing has not yet been scheduled.
