WA Senate Democrats Choose Pedersen as Next Majority Leader

Following the retirement of Washington State Senator Andy Billig, D-Spokane, the Washington Senate Democratic Caucus has officially selected Sen. Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle, as the new Senate Majority Leader. Pedersen has been in the Senate since 2013 after previously serving in the House of Representatives from 2006-2012. He began serving as Majority Floor Leader in 2022 and chairs the Senate Law and Justice Committee.
Pedersen will be the first new Senate Majority Leader since Billig took over the post in 2018 and represents the 43rd Legislative District which includes parts of downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill, Fremont, Laurelhurst, and the University of Washington campus.
The SDC also re-elected Sen. Bob Hasegawa as Majority Caucus Chair and, which he has held since 2018. Additional leadership and committee structures will be voted on and finalized in the coming weeks before the 2025 session begins on January 13th.
