Arizona Act Modernization Bill Advances

SB1296, the Credit Union Act Modernization bill that unanimously passed in the Senate last week, jumped another hurdle Tuesday; it passed out of the House Commerce Committee with a vote of 10-0. The next step will be the House Rules Committee, where it, as happened in the Senate, has a chance to be put on the consent calendar and moved to a Senate floor vote.

These advancements are possible because of credit unions’ engagement in advocacy. In 2023, the Arizona State Issues Work Group and the state Governmental Affairs Committee collaborated with GoWest to conceptualize the bill. Advocates continued to support the bill in conversations with the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions, at the 2024 Credit Union Day at the Capitol, and in ongoing conversations with legislators.
