Washington Legislature Adjourns After Passing Budgets and Major Fiscal Changes

The Washington Legislature officially adjourned its session last week bringing to a close several months of policy debate, budget negotiations, and fiscal decision‑making in Olympia.

Before adjourning, lawmakers approved updated operating, transportation, and infrastructure budgets, setting the framework for how the state will fund core services and invest in critical infrastructure across the state. As in prior sessions, the budget process came as the Legislature tackled a continued disconnect between projected revenue and desired spending with major macroeconomic headwinds in the state, nationally, and globally.

To balance the budgets, legislators enacted a series of tax and fiscal policy changes that will shape the state’s revenue outlook and economic competitiveness moving forward.

While some issues were resolved during the session, other unresolved high-profile topics like financial fraud prevention, mortgage servicing, artificial intelligence, financial education, and financial products will continue throughout the rest of the year.

Over the coming weeks, we will publish issue‑specific blog posts that take a closer look at key outcomes from the session, with a particular focus on items that matter most to credit unions and the members you serve. These deeper dives will highlight policy impacts, emerging considerations, and what to watch as new laws and budget provisions take effect.

Stay tuned for those updates and thank you to the many credit union advocates who engaged throughout the session and helped ensure our perspective was heard at the Capitol.
