Summer Recess + Advocacy Training = Win-Win

It’s that time of the year when Members of Congress and State Legislators are “back home” in their respective districts. The summer recess, particularly in August for Members of Congress, offers rare opportunities to help shape policy as lawmakers are generally more accessible when they are in the district/state. Additionally, State Legislators are also home from their legislative session and will be until the end of the year.

Credit union advocates can maximize their impact during elected officials’ summer district visits by strategically planning engagement that is personal, visible, and action-focused. It’s a great time to seek out opportunities to discuss the credit union difference. Working with your internal advocates via the advocacy coordinator and key contacts programs can set you up for success. If you don’t know yours, reach out to us, and we will help connect you.

How to Connect with Elected Officials Back in District

The great news is that you don’t have to start from scratch. Inviting elected officials to your credit union or to community events are easy ways to highlight the credit union’s operations and showcase community engagement. Additionally, many elected officials already attend Chamber of Commerce events, town halls, or participate in civic organizations’ meetings, such as Kiwanis or Lions Clubs. By following their newsletters or social media channels, you can learn the issues they are most concerned with and identify opportunities to engage with them.

Partner with GoWest for Maximum Benefit

The GoWest Advocacy team helps make it easy to prepare and connect with your lawmakers. It’s a tremendous opportunity to share with them the great impact your credit union makes in the community and how that translates into tangible benefits to your members and beyond.

Your state lobbyist, as well as the Grassroots and Political Advocacy team, should be part of the planning process in order to help align messaging and ensure your team is well prepared for meetings. If you are planning to engage, please be sure to connect with our team. We can help and want to know about all the great connections you’re making!
