Tucson Federal Credit Union’s Employee Book Club Builds Financial Wellness Through Positivity and Joy

At Tucson Federal Credit Union financial wellness goes beyond budgets and balance sheets — it’s about building a healthy relationship with money. That’s the focus of their employee book clubs, where team members come together to explore books that address financial anxiety, the power of positive thinking, and the pursuit of joy in everyday life.

Through recent readings, employees have engaged in honest conversations about how personal experiences and internal narratives shape the way we spend, save, and view money. By identifying the roots of financial stress and replacing negative self-talk with empowering messages, participants are learning to approach their finances with greater confidence and clarity.

“In early 2024, I held our first book club session,” shared Lisa Atkinson, Personal Financial Coach at Tucson Federal Credit Union. “We met through a short series of virtual meetings where we explored a workbook on financial anxiety. I continue to offer sessions with employees utilizing this book, and through the book club sessions, we build a supportive space for growth, self-reflection, and community. It’s helping our team create stronger, more mindful relationships with money.”

“During May, which is universally recognized as Mental Health Month, I am offering a one-time book club meeting on happiness,” Atkinson added. “Together we will discuss a short book that offers fun and positive ideas on how to increase the happiness in our lives!”

What employees are saying about the book clubs:

“I wasn’t sure what to expect but this has been such a positive experience! Each meeting was filled with insightful discussions and diverse perspectives. It was a great way to connect with coworkers and be able to support each other on our development.”

“This book really grounded me and inspired me to own and accept my flaws and make the change I need to be successful. Overall, it really helped me have control of my anxiety.”

“Can’t wait to join the next book club!”

“Joining the Book Club for Soundtracks was a great experience. I usually struggle with self-help books, but breaking it down into chapters and discussing it with the group really helped me stay focused. I highly recommend joining the next book club to connect with coworkers in a new way!”

Books were provided by the credit union’s HR department at no cost to employees. Sessions were scheduled, with supervisor approval, during paid work hours.
