Our Community Credit Union (OURCU) was featured in an April 2024 segment of Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid highlighting the Credit Union Movement in Washington State.
Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid is a Telly award-winning documentary series that is dedicated to developing and distributing social and educational programming that has one thing in common—changing our lives for the better.
In the Viewpoint segment that has been distributed across public television stations nationwide, OURCU President and CEO Ryan Drake talks about the importance of building relationships with members, the community, and the unique opportunities that credit unions hold to make a difference in each person’s life, upholding the credit union philosophy of People Helping People.
“We’re very involved in the community, and that’s a strength of ours. But it’s not required by regulation like other financial institutions, and it’s just in our DNA,” said Drake in the segment. “As a matter of fact, we like to say Community is our middle name and so we fulfill that.”
The story also features OURCU staff, select community members, local business owner and OURCU member, Jeff Slakey, and Mason County Sheriff Ryan Spurling.
“OURCU has been instrumental in us being able to keep our K9 program going. We don’t have the funding through the county to fund a K9 program. So they’ve stepped up in a big way,” Spurling said in the Viewpoint segment. “OURCU would reach out to us—how can we help you help the community to be a better place, to reduce crime, to make it safer for our community? You just have to respect that because they are looking, they are not waiting for someone to come to them. They are looking for ways to invest in and help the community, and that’s awesome.”
OURCU was approached by Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid in 2023 to be a featured segment. Our Community Credit Union has a rich history in Washington, established in 1941 by the Simpson Logging Company employees to provide alternative financial solutions, education, and community support when workers were denied basic financial needs from traditional banking institutions. Remaining true to their roots, for more than 80 years OURCU still serves the people of Washington State with a personal approach to banking through flexible and innovative financial solutions.
