Initial Washington primary election results set stage for November elections

Washington’s 2026 primary election has narrowed the field in several key congressional and legislative races, setting the stage for an active fall campaign season. Initial results provide an early look at voter sentiment, though ballot counting will continue in the days ahead.

At the federal level, two closely watched races moved a step closer to November. In Central Washington’s open congressional seat, Yakima County Commissioner Amanda McKinney advanced to the general election, while Southwest Washington’s 3rd Congressional District is shaping up to remain one of the state’s marquee contests, though incumbent Democrat Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez had a stronger showing than some analysts projected and will face State Senator John Braun in the general election.

Across the state, a number of legislative incumbents — including credit union champions — and challengers secured spots on the general election ballot, ensuring voters will have important choices this fall in races that could help shape policy priorities in Olympia. Several legislative districts in Southwest Washington and Pierce County highlight that House Democrats will have eyes on flipping as many as seven seats from incumbent Republicans.
