Arizona Credit Unions Unite for Bite of Reality During #AZCUWEEK
Posted by Alyse Knudsen on May 6, 2026
In April, 12 Arizona credit unions joined forces to bring real-world financial education to more than 500 students across the Phoenix area as part of Arizona Credit Union Week (#AZCUWEEK). Through a series of Bite of Reality financial reality fairs, the collaboration demonstrated the power of partnership and a shared commitment to building financially resilient communities.
The Arizona Credit Union Collaboration — made up of Alhambra Credit Union, Arizona Central Credit Union, Arizona Financial Credit Union, Copper State Credit Union, Credit Union West, First Credit Union, Hughes Federal Credit Union, Landings Credit Union, OneAZ Credit Union, Pinal County Federal Credit Union, TruWest Credit Union, and Vantage West Credit Union — hosted Bite of Reality simulations throughout April.
Extending the Impact of #AZCUWEEK
For several years, Arizona’s credit unions have celebrated Arizona Credit Union Week, a statewide initiative that highlights the credit union difference through service and community engagement.
“Arizona’s Credit Unions have been collaborating for several years with our annual #AZCUWeek,” said Rachel Caballero, Community Development and PR Manager at TruWest Credit Union. “During this week, we have a pay it forward day, celebrating credit union-owned businesses and paying for consumers’ purchases; participate in a day of service across the state where we come together to support our communities; have a social media blitz day on International Credit Union Day where we educate on the benefits of joining a credit union; and a Financial Football Friday with the help of VISA and Velera. We decided that a week wasn’t enough and that we wanted to make a longer-lasting impact and Bite of Reality was the perfect way to do that.”
Events were held at:
- Phoenix College Preparatory Academy (two sessions serving 30 students each)
- Betty Fairfax High School in Laveen (five back-to-back sessions serving 60 students each)
- McKemy Academy of International Studies in Tempe (50 students)
- Poston Butte High School in San Tan Valley (150 students)
Together, the fairs provided hands-on financial education to more than 500 students in just a few days, and the credit unions are already planning to host several more events in the coming months.
What Is Bite of Reality?
Bite of Reality (BOR) is an interactive, app-based financial education simulation that gives students a “day-in-the-life” experience of managing adult finances. Participants are assigned a career, income, credit score, and debt scenario, then receive a budget to guide their spending decisions.
As they move through the simulation, students make choices around housing, transportation, food, childcare, and more — while also navigating unexpected expenses along the way.
The experience provides a realistic look at the trade-offs and financial responsibilities that come with adulthood, helping students build practical money management skills before entering the workforce full time.
Why It Matters
Programs like Bite of Reality play a critical role in strengthening communities. By giving young people hands-on exposure to budgeting, prioritizing expenses, and handling financial surprises, the program helps them avoid common financial pitfalls and make informed decisions.
At a higher level, this type of financial education supports stronger, more resilient communities. When individuals understand how to manage their money effectively, they are better positioned to achieve financial stability, reduce debt, and contribute to long-term economic well-being.
The impact is already significant. So far in 2026, credit unions across the GoWest region have hosted 99 Bite of Reality fairs, benefiting more than 12,000 youth participants.
Bringing Bite of Reality to Your Community
The Bite of Reality program is sponsored by the GoWest Foundation, which provides financial reality fair kits to help credit unions host events in their own communities.
Credit unions interested in bringing a Bite of Reality fair to local schools or youth organizations can apply for a kit through the GoWest Foundation’s grant program or reach out directly to Nayab Abbasi, GoWest Foundation Senior Manager, for more information.
By working together — as Arizona credit unions did this April — the credit union movement continues to empower the next generation with the knowledge and confidence to navigate their financial futures.
