The ASSET Act passes Colorado House Finance Committee

Today, HB 1110The ASSET Act – passed out of the House Finance Committee by a vote of 8-3, advancing a priority of Colorado’s credit unions to add another tool to combat fraud targeting elders and vulnerable adults.

The bill hearing benefitted from credit union voices showing up to demonstrate their support for their members. Luke Justice, Assistant VP of Fraud at Credit Union of Denver, shared his experience supporting members dealing with fraud over his 19 years of experience. Leslie Shepard, President and CEO of SunWest Credit Union, shared how important this legislation could be for people like her son, who is an at-risk adult.

Dr. Eric Chess, clinical professor at University of Denver and healthy aging expert, also testified in committee to share his support for the bill, highlighting the importance of giving financial institutions more tools to help stop financial exploitation.

The bill also caught the attention of local media with investigative reporter Steve Staeger from 9 News covering the hearing and how the bill might help consumers and financial institutions. Luke Justice once again did an amazing job sharing how credit unions are stepping up to support this new tool to protect their members.
