Take Stock of Proactive Advocacy Engagement Strategies Today
Posted by Jordan Beyer on October 31, 2025
There has been no shortage of headlines in the news nationally or across the GoWest region that intersects with the work credit unions are doing to meet the moment for their members. From economic uncertainty, rising delinquencies, and a government shutdown impacting cross sections of credit union membership, it is important to take time to reflect on how credit union advocates can be more engaged in the policymaking process.
As we wind down in 2025 and look to the 2026 state legislative sessions, and must-pass appropriations bills in Washington, D.C., it’s a good time to revisit some of the very best ways to be proactive in our credit union advocacy.
We talk all the time about the importance of telling your credit union stories. It is critical that we show how credit unions step up for their members and share those details with policymakers. We also prepare to be responsive to Calls to Action, both supportive of positive legislation for credit unions and defensive in cases where legislation is proposed that could impact how credit unions serve their members. If you’re reading this blog article, you very likely are doing so because this is one of the ways you’ve been encouraged to stay in the know. As we move through this final quarter of the year, it may be helpful to share three ways in which we can all continue to grow in our advocacy engagement.
- Get familiar with the legislators who represent you. Research the issues they are most passionate about. Follow their newsletters and social media, and keep up with ways to connect with them in district. From Town Halls to community events, these are great opportunities to introduce yourself and share more about the work you do for your credit union. Share your insights and experiences over in the Grassroots and Political CU Conversations.
- Work with your leadership team at your credit union to identify internal opportunities that exist to get more engaged. For leaders, be on the lookout for team members that have expressed interest in advocacy and find ways to include them in discussions related to advocacy engagement.
- Plan to join the upcoming 2026 Days at the Capitol in each of the GoWest region’s state capitals. These events are critical opportunities for credit unions to show up unified in our asks of legislators. Details can be found here. We greatly anticipate seeing you there.
We look forward to hearing from you on the ways you are staying engaged in the coming months. Your Grassroots and Political team is available for any questions you may have.
