Financial Literacy Legislation Becomes Law in Colorado!
Posted by Katie March on May 27, 2025

On Friday Governor Polis signed a bill into law that would require Financial Literacy as a graduation requirement in Colorado.
Credit unions too often see the challenges their members face in making responsible financial decisions due to the concerning lack of financial education. A few credit union representatives were honored to be invited to partake in the signing festivities as supporters of this initiative.
HB 25-1192 will require the teaching of financial literacy curriculum in high schools and ensure that students fill out forms to request free state and federal financial aid (the FAFSA or CAFSA).
The passage of this legislation is a win for Colorado students. Your GoWest team is excited to work with credit unions to identify opportunities to support the implementation and continue to further financial education with Colorado students now that the bill has passed. Keep on the lookout for opportunities for further engagement.
Thanks to the many credit union advocates who supported this legislation’s passage and for the work you do in financial literacy. A special thanks to Chris Wallace at Credit Union of Denver and Stephanie Hayes Levi from Ent Credit Union for attending the bill signing (especially because Katie had lost her voice for the bill signing and they had to comically act as her translators as she tried to communicate through charade-like hand gestures). Much appreciation also to Governor Polis, and the bill sponsors who attended, Representatives Jennifer Bacon and Anthony Hartsook, and Senator Jeff Bridges.
