Calabria to Help Manage CFPB in Interim

GoWest has been closely following leadership changes at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) over the past month, offering insights and predictions on federal appointments and actions. As anticipated, Mark Calabria, a prominent figure in financial regulation, has stepped into a leadership role at the CFPB. Detailed to the agency from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Calabria will assist in managing the CFPB’s operations and reviewing regulatory policies.

Calabria’s involvement follows a series of major shifts at the Bureau:

  • February 1: President Trump fired CFPB Director Rohit Chopra.
  • February 3: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was named Acting Director and shut down external communications.
  • February 8: Russell Vought replaced Bessent, halted staff operations, closed CFPB headquarters, fired probationary employees and cut the agency’s funding.
  • February 11: President Trump nominated Jonathan McKernan as the next CFPB director.

Until McKernan is confirmed, Calabria will play a key role in reviewing CFPB policies and regulations. His work extends beyond the CFPB, as he is also expected to assess rules related to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), where he previously served as Director under the Trump Administration.

Calabria’s involvement may also be part of a broader push to bring independent agencies under greater executive oversight. A recent White House executive order outlines plans to consolidate authority over agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Federal Reserve, which funds the CFPB. This move signals a shift toward increased White House control over financial and consumer protection regulations.
