Credit Union Representatives Testify on Education-Related Bills

Two credit union representatives had the opportunity testify on education-related legislation this past week as the Legislature continues working on more than 1,500 bills that have already been introduced during this ongoing session.
Charlotte Nemec, the President and CEO of Canopy Credit Union and co-chair of the Washington Governmental Affairs Committee, testified in support of Senate Bill 5080 that would make financial education a high school graduation requirement. The Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee held a public hearing on the bill, while the House works on a similar version. Washington Credit Unions are supporting both bills and encouraging legislators to merge the two proposals into one final plan that can pass this session.
Additionally, Traci McGlathery the VP of Community Impact and Advocacy with STCU, testified in support of Senate Bill 5442 to create a College Promise Pilot Program. The testimony also provided a great chance to highlight STCU’s work hosting FAFSA completion trainings throughout their branch network, which was of interest to Senator Slatter.
