TOPCU Receives Net Zero Hero Award for Green Lending Program

Tucson Old Pueblo Credit Union recently received a Net Zero Hero Community Impact Award from Tucson Electric Power (TEP) for its meaningful work that protects the environment, preserves natural resources, and advances sustainability.

TOPCU’s Green Loan program offers low-cost financing for eco-friendly products and services such as energy-efficient home renovations and appliances, water harvesting systems, and even bikes and eBikes. The program’s goal is to help make environmental responsibility affordable.

The Green Loan program was launched in 2015 in response to a request from Technicians for Sustainability, a Tucson-based company specializing in solar energy and sustainable technologies, for affordable loan options that could support green investments. “We started by seeking a solution to a community need, and the program expanded from there,” explained Sustainable Lending Manager Joanna Jackson.

Loans to low-income applicants comprise nearly 40% of CDFI-designated TOPCU’s green loan portfolio.

TOPCU’s two branches also feature rooftop solar and xeriscape landscaping for reduced water usage. The locations are committed to recycling, and the sustainable lending program is more than 99% online, reducing paper waste.

“Tucson Old Pueblo Credit Union is not only doing their part at their own facilities to support a more sustainable future, but importantly, are removing financial barriers to participation for all of our customers, including those with limited financial resources,” said Walter Yosin, Manager of Energy Programs. “We applaud their work in support of energy and water conservation.”
