First Credit Union Brings Back Successful Financial Education Event for Teens
Posted by Alyse Knudsen on October 1, 2024
First Credit Union hosted Mad City Money, an immersive financial education experience for junior high and high school students on Sept. 21 at Estrella Community College in Avondale, Ariz., just west of Phoenix. This free event offered teens the opportunity to learn crucial budgeting skills in a fun, game-style format.
First Credit Union welcomed 50 teens from across the Valley interested in learning more about setting a budget and making decisions related to rent, food, school, and work. During the event, each participant was assigned a future identity, including an occupation, salary, family situation, and potential debt. Students then navigate through various life scenarios, such as housing, transportation, food, clothing, childcare, and entertainment, while managing their budget.
“As a parent, I took my son to this event earlier this year. I can tell you firsthand it leaves a lasting impact,” shared Jay Curtis, President and CEO of First Credit Union. “The teens are thrown into very real scenarios and forced to make difficult financial decisions. It’s eye-opening and, for many of them, their first experience building a budget.”
Through this interactive simulation, teens gain practical insights into real-world financial challenges. As a bonus for participating, each of the 50 participants had an opportunity to open a First Credit Union account, earning $5 towards a savings account and $50 for a checking account, just for participating.
First Credit Union partnered with Hot 97.5 FM radio to lead the festivities and provide entertainment throughout the event. Additionally, there was a cash grab machine available at the event, ensuring that every participant left a winner.
Mad City Money guarantees to deliver both educational value and entertainment, providing teenagers with an enriching insight into personal finance while also offering an enjoyable experience to share with their peers. “We are proud to host this event and play a role in shaping the financial future of our community,” Curtis added.
