Job Description:

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Oversee direction and administration of Accounting department.

Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee/ Prepare accurate GAAP-compliant financial reporting, regulatory filings, audits and internal controls.
  2. Responsible for all financial reporting, including government reporting, tax filings, and internal reporting.
  3. Assist the Accounting Manager with the month-end close process, GL Reconciliation review and maintaining SOP’s.
  4. Monitor, forecast, and manage credit union liquidity.
  5. Manage investment portfolio per policies and established guidelines.
  6. Work with auditors and regulators on audits and examinations.
  7. Direct activities of the Accounting department.
  8. Manage and mentor the accounting and finance teams, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
  9. Work closely with executive leadership and department heads to translate financial objectives into actionable priorities.
  10. Oversee departmental staff training.
  11. Develop budgets, forecasts, ALM, and financial roadmaps that support sustainable growth and strategic initiatives.
  12. Develop and maintain internal controls and financial procedures systems to ensure the safety and soundness of assets throughout the organization.
  13. Assist senior leadership in setting appropriate risk tolerances and developing methodologies to assess, rank, and validate risk controls.
  14. Make recommendations for creating and implementing departmental and organizational efficiencies, policies, and procedures.
  15. Influence strategy, strengthen infrastructure, and help guide the organization through growth and change.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • 5+ year progressive accounting experience (preferably in a credit union).
  • 2+ years of elevated management over accounting/finance role (ie. (VP) Controller or (AVP) Assistant Controller).
  • Excellent analytical skills, people skills, and self-direction.
  • Strong knowledge of banking or credit union regulations.
  • Proficient computer and typing skills, including fluency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and a general acumen to learn and use new systems.

Preferred Skills & Abilities:

  • A strong understanding of financial institution (preferably credit union) practices, services, products, and programs, as well as standard procedures and legal requirements.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, NCIA/ banking regulations, and complex financial reporting standards.
  • CPA/ CMA/ or CIA license preferred.
  • Familiarity with NCUA 5300 Call Report preparation.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to present financial strategy to senior leadership, the Board, and regulators.
  • Proven track record of leading and developing high-performing teams in a collaborative, results-driven environment.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on strategic planning and operational efficiency.
  • High proficiency with accounting systems, financial modeling tools, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines while handling several assignments.
  • Ability to interpret regulatory changes and translate them into actionable policies and strategies.
  • Solid understanding of advanced financial concepts, including capital ratios and risk modeling.
  • Must be able to meet and comply with all company bond requirements, policies, compliance rules, applicable laws and regulations.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires manual dexterity, such as lifting items up to 25 lbs. and opening and operating office equipment.
  • The position most often operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, monitors, phones, photocopiers, scanners, printers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • This position requires bending, stooping, or standing as necessary.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally in English, verbally, and in writing.
